The Department of Clinical Radiology at Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) and Planmed Oy have signed a significant framework agreement for the development and research of the world's first cone-beam CT scanner capable of upright posture and full-body images in the weight-bearing position. This innovative device, Planmed XFI®, sets a new standard in patient safety and diagnostic accuracy.
"In the early stages, the intention is to examine cochlear implants postoperatively after surgery, because the device is installed horizontally. In the next phase, we hope to perform orthopedic imaging, in which case the device will be moved to an upright position," says Professor Juhana Hakumäki, Chief Physician of Clinical Radiology at Kuopio University Hospital.
The cooperation focuses on the development and validation of the Planmed XFI scanner for clinical use under the supervision of the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea). During the study, the performance and image quality of the scanner will be evaluated in practical clinical work, including its use in surgical robotics. The advantages of the new scanner are significant: it provides sharper images while using less ionizing radiation than conventional CT devices, thereby reducing radiation exposure for patients and the associated health risks.
In addition, the device enables imaging patients in various positions, such as the upright position, which enhances the diagnosis of musculoskeletal diseases, in particular. For example, imaging the inner ear in the supine position improves image quality and reduces interference caused by movement.
The clinical research device has now been installed in the Department of Clinical Radiology at Kuopio University Hospital, and user training is about to begin. The first research phase focuses on imaging the inner ear and lower limb joints in cooperation with the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and the Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Hand Surgery.

Cooperation with Planmed Oy offers the Wellbeing Services County and the University of Eastern Finland a great opportunity to develop and research cutting-edge technology of the future together with a leading Finnish imaging equipment manufacturer," says the principal investigator, Professor Juhana Hakumäki.
